Mass Finishing is a term used to describe a group of industrial processes by which large lots of manufactured parts can be processed in bulk economically to achieve a variety of surface effects. These economical processes, in contrast with hand deburring methods, develop these effects with a high degree of part-to-part and lot-to-lot uniformity and consistency. These effects might include edge break, edge contour, surface smoothing and improvement, tool mark blending, burnishing, polishing, super-finishing and micro finishing. Moreover, the increased complexity and precision requirements of mechanical products have reinforced the need for accurately producing and controlling the edge and surface finish of manufactured parts. Variations in the surface texture can influence a variety of performance characteristics. The surface finish can affect the ability of the part to resist wear and fatigue; to assist or destroy effective lubrication; to increase or decrease friction and/or abrasion with cooperating parts; and to resist corrosion.
